0117 - Life Skills Development

Developing life skills is very important to people living with disabilities. Living with family members who do everything for them, there is no incentive to develop these life skills. That limits them in how independent they can be and makes it impossible for them to live on their own.

At MyAdvancedCare, we take this problem seriously and we are experts in helping the disabled person overcome this sense of dependence. We teach them a variety of real life skills that can help them when it’s time for them to live on their own and participate in the greater community. Our instruction includes:

Showering, toilet training, and personal care

Shopping for groceries and planning meals

Performing household tasks such as washing clothes and vacuuming

Planning public transport journeys

Developing problem solving skills

Developing life improvement strategies

Showering and toilet training are the most important life skills for the disabled to master. Unfortunately, many have never had proper instruction. The family wants to help but may not realise how this holds disabled people back from an independent life. We take the time and make the effort to show them how they can bathe and use the toilet without help. These are important first steps.

Shopping for personal groceries can also be a challenge if someone has always done this for them. Knowing when to get groceries, where to go, and how to choose the right products can be daunting. We slowly teach them these skills so that they can go shopping by themselves and enjoy having ownership over their food choices. This is very freeing for the average disabled person.

Washing their own clothes and keeping a house clean is also important. It allows themselves to present well to the outside community. It also helps them keep their own space clean so they can have guests over. This is one more step towards them living on their own.
