0116 - Innovative Community Participation

Becoming a part of the community is an integral part of the lives of people living with disabilities. All too often, a disabled person can give up on community integration when it seems the obstacles are too great.

That’s why MyAdvancedCare works with them to bring them out of their homes and into a community setting where they can experience a full and satisfying life. It entertains, frees their family from housebound constraints, and engages the entire community. Everyone benefits from this service and the community becomes stronger!

Developing confidence is the key part of this integration work. So many disabled people feel very limited in the choices they have. They don’t understand that with a little bit of assistance and a solid sense of confidence, they can become active community members.

Depending on their level of disability, they can find ways to participate in society at large and become a contributing member of society. They simply need the confidence to do so.

The Community Participation services provided by MyAdvancedCare help the disabled person:

Gain confidence and self awareness

Develop new interests and skills

Improve problem solving skills

Become more aware of social norms and expectations

Learning new skills is also very important to a disabled person. Whether previous interests have fallen away post incident, or a permanently disabled person has never tried to take up a hobby, a lack of stimulation from engaging in interests can be devastating. We show them variations of their interests and new skills that result in fun and exciting pastimes.

Problem solving is a major life skill that is often ignored when helping disabled people live full lives. They may recognise they have a problem doing certain things, but they may not realise that there are solutions out there to help them overcome their problems. This leads to greater independence in the community and greater interaction with the community at large. Everyone wins.

Understanding social norms and expectations is the final moving part in successful community participation. They may be used to living with family members who will tolerate them acting eccentrically and not expect them to follow social norms.

The outside world, on the other hand, will expect them to behave according to social norms. We will teach them the skills that non disabled people pick up automatically. This leads them to become more accepted members of society.
